At the very south of Siberut Island, there are two very gifted little tiny Islands known as Nyang Nyang Island and Karanmayat Island, together they gather more than a dozen waves out of which five are clearly classified as world class waves. Advanced surfers, it’s time to practice your barrel riding abilities! – –
Rifles, a very fast powerful hollow and shallow right hander, the best wave for regular advanced surfers, at its best with strong South swells and Northwest winds, offering up to three barrel sections. Kandui, often known as well as No Kandui, the best wave for goofie advanced surfers, a very fast powerful hollow and shallow left hander, at its best with South West swells and East winds, offering cavernous barrels.
Hideways & E-Bay, both fast powerful hollow and shallow left handers, at their best with South West swells and Sout East winds and Bankvaults, a fast and powerful fear inducing hollow right hander reasonably shallow. Under a strong south swell, three other fast & powerful hollow shallow waves pop up, Shadow right & Shadow left and Eret, considered as the most perfect waves of the area when at their best.
If you are still an intermediate surfer, you can still aim for these waves when swells are small to medium sized. But watch out for the Reefs ! Surfing the Mentawai Islands when you are an intermediate surfer is actually all about being able to deal with the Reefs, one mistake and you may be out for a few days, all the following waves are also Reef breaks but are mainly mellow and less shallow, and very important point not that fast in comparison with their world class sisters, allowing you to practice your turns and of course to make mistakes. The Playgrounds Area actually features many of this kind of waves.
Good times, a very fun and workable mellow left hander not shallow at all, offering long playfull walls, Beng Bengs, a fun and workable mellow left hander reasonably shallow, offering a long rippable shoulder, Pitstops, a fun and workable hollow right hander reasonably shallow ending up on sands, hollow enough at the inside to learn getting barreled, Burgerworld, a very fun and workable mellow right hander, not shallow at all, offering long rippable walls, Nipussi, a fun and workable mellow right hander, reasonably shallow, offering some solid rippable walls, AFrames, a fun and workable reasonably hollow and shallow lef hander, offering long rippable walls, 4 bobs, a fun and workable mellow right hander, which remains a good option when some big swells hit the Playgrounds area such as Karangbat, a very mellow right hander.
